Cry of A Soul
Psalm 140

Introduction
This is a psalm of David to cry out to God in a time of trouble, and that trouble was the slander against him when he escaped from Saul’s court.
1. Seeking God’s Deliverance (Psalm 140:1–5).
The Prayer for Deliverance from Evil Men (Psalm 140:1–3).
David experienced suffering under the presence and pressure of evil men. He composed many psalms out of the suffering they caused him. These evil men continually plotted against him in their hearts, gathering together for war against him and sharpening their tongues like serpents. He prayed to the Lord to deliver him from them.
The Prayer for Preservation from Evil Men (Psalm 140:4–5).
David did not only pray for deliverance from evil men but also for preservation from the hands of the wicked. He offered this specific prayer because the evil men continually sought to hunt and harm him, setting traps in his path.
2. Seeking God’s Help (Psalm 140:6–11).
Praying for God’s Strength and Salvation (Psalm 140:6–8).
David affirmed that there was no god except the God of Israel, the Lord of the covenant. He cried out to the Lord as his Master and God and declared that He was the strength of his salvation. In the midst of all battles, he knew that God had been his protection, shield, and armor. He prayed that God would grant the desires of His people and frustrate the desires of the wicked.
Gods Prayer Regarding the Wicked (Psalm 140:9–11).
David spoke of the head of those who surrounded him. There is much speculation about who this figure was — he may have been Saul (1 Samuel 24:1–7) or Doeg (1 Samuel 21–22). This person spoke against David, and so David prayed for justice. He prayed that the wicked would be destroyed and pursued by evil until they were overthrown.
3. Confidence in God’s Victory (Psalm 140:12–13).
David was confident that God would defend the afflicted and bring justice to the poor against the words and works of wicked men. These verses are an affirmation of faith. The Lord’s reign brings life and justice to the oppressed, while the kingdoms of the world do the opposite. Therefore, the people of God shall praise and give thanks to His name as they dwell in His presence.
Conclusion
When we are surrounded by evil people and continually harmed by them, let us come to God seeking His deliverance and preservation as His people. David took this path to deal with evil.
