Praise for the Past and Confidence for the Future

Psalm 138

Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj

Introduction

Psalm 138 stands as a powerful declaration of praise and trust. Positioned after Psalm 137, which mourns the pain of exile, Psalm 138 transitions to hope, stating that even kings will one day praise the Lord.

1. Praise the Lord for the Past (Psalm 138:1-3).

  • David begins with wholehearted praise, acknowledging Gods unique sovereignty. Even when far from the temple, he worships and offers sacrifices, affirming that idols are nothing compared to the true God. He prays toward the direction of Gods temple, demonstrating devotion regardless of circumstance.
  • ’Gods reasons for praise are twofold: Gods steadfast love and His unchanging truth. Gods word is exalted above His name, showing the supreme value of His promises. David also praises God for answering prayers, rescuing him from trouble, and giving him boldness and strength.

2. Confidence for the Future (Psalm 138:4-8).

  • David expresses confidence that all the kings of the earth will ultimately praise the Lord. As they come to know Gods word and works, they too will honor Him. Gods greatness is evident in His care for the humble and His distance from the proud, demonstrating that true greatness is characterized by compassion and humility.
  • David trusts that God will continue to deliver him from trouble. Even in the midst of difficulties, he is confident that Gods kindness will revive him. He affirms that God has a perfect plan for his life and concludes with a prayer that God will never abandon the work of His hands.

Conclusion

Reflecting on Gods past faithfulness inspires gratitude and strengthens our confidence for the future. We praise God for His lovingkindness and the power of His word. This gratitude fuels trust that God will continue His redeeming work, even in troubled times. Do you praise God for His past faithfulness, and does it give you confidence for the future?
