Confidence in God’s Care
Psalm 129
Rev. Dr. Devadosan Sugirtharaj
Introduction
Psalm 129 is part of the Songs of Ascents—a collection of psalms sung by pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem. This psalm captures both the harsh realities faced by God’s people and their steadfast confidence in God’s power to deliver.
1. God’s Care for His Afflicted People (Psalm 129:1-4).
- ’Gods people are afflicted (Psalm 129:1-3).
The psalmist frames this as Israel’s collective testimony. From their “youth”—a reference to their time in Egypt (Jeremiah 2:2)—Israel has faced centuries of suffering at the hands of many nations: Egyptians, Philistines, Canaanites, Syrians, Assyrians,Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, and more. The vivid image of plowers plowing long furrows upon Israel’s back illustrates deep and ongoing affliction.
- ’Gods people cannot be destroyed (Psalm 129:4).
Despite relentless suffering, Israel endures. They are among the world’s longest-surviving ethnic groups, a testament to God’s preserving care. God is righteous and faithful, always keeping His promises to His people. The Lord “cuts in pieces the cords of the wicked, ” ensuring the survival of Israel against all odds.
2. Prayer for Continued Deliverance (Psalm 129:5-8).
The psalmist turns to prayer, asking God to deliver His people from their enemies and to judge righteously. He uses the metaphor of grass on the rooftop: it springs up quickly but withers just as fast, illustrating the fleeting and ultimately unfulfilling life of those who oppose God’s people. Such enemies not only miss God’s blessings but cannot even pass them along traditionally. Their lives, disconnected from God’s purposes, remain empty and short-lived.
Conclusion
Life as God’s people is not free from challenges or opposition. Yet, God’s faithful care remains constant. He defends and preserves His own, even in the face of adversity. So, do not lose heart—God cares for you and will continue to uphold His promises.
