Dealing with Backsliding

John.21:1-14

Introduction

• We continue to explore God’s message on encountering risen Christ in this Easter season. Today we meditate on how Christ dealt with the backsliding of disciples from John.21:1-14.

Word Study

• Backsliding is one of those terms like "Trinity", a term which is not found in Scripture but which is found in truth all through the Bible. Backsliding occurs in English and Tamil translations. Note that some Bible versions use the term apostasy interchangeably with backsliding. There are some reference resources that propose that apostasy and backsliding describe different events. Apostasy is a permanent condition and backsliding is a temporary lapse (duration not specified).

When we lack faith and trust in God, we will easily be swayed by the backsliding attitude. John.21:1-3

• 1. After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [a]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 
• 1. இவைகளுக்குப்பின்பு இயேசு திபேரியா கடற்கரையிலே மறுபடியும் சீஷருக்குத் தம்மை வெளிப்படுத்தினார்; வெளிப்படுத்தின விவரமாவது:2. சீமோன்பேதுருவும், திதிமு என்னப்பட்ட தோமாவும், கலிலேயா நாட்டிலுள்ள கானா ஊரானாகிய நாத்தான்வேலும், செபெதேயுவின் குமாரரும், அவருடைய சீஷரில் வேறு இரண்டுபேரும் கூடியிருக்கும்போது,3. சீமோன்பேதுரு மற்றவர்களை நோக்கி: மீன்பிடிக்கப்போகிறேன் என்றான். அதற்கு அவர்கள்: நாங்களும் உம்முடனேகூட வருகிறோம் என்றார்கள். அவர்கள் புறப்பட்டுப்போய், உடனே படவேறினார்கள். அந்த இராத்திரியிலே அவர்கள் ஒன்றும் பிடிக்கவில்லை.
• The Sea of Tiberias was the commonplace of their professional fishing in their lives before they followed Jesus. They returned to their own business by leaving the mission. They compromised to return to a former occupation by giving up their call due to the lack of trust and faith in the risen Lord. However, their backsliding was not successful too. They were disappointed.
• When we have problems trusting God, we become easy targets of backsliding and we usually give up our faith in God and walk away from him. However, our backsliding life does not give us alternative success but more disappointments. 
• Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
• 41. நீங்கள் சோதனைக்குட்படாதபடிக்கு விழித்திருந்து ஜெபம்பண்ணுங்கள்; ஆவி உற்சாகமுள்ளதுதான், மாம்சமோ பலவீனமுள்ளது என்றார்.
• Colossians 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
• 2. இடைவிடாமல் ஜெபம்பண்ணுங்கள், ஸ்தோத்திரத்துடன் ஜெபத்தில் விழித்திருங்கள்
• Biblical example: Hosea 11:8 “How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I set you like Zeboiim? My heart [i]churns within Me; My sympathy is stirred.
• 8. எப்பிராயீமே, நான் உன்னை எப்படிக் கைவிடுவேன்? இஸ்ரவேலே, நான் உன்னை எப்படி ஒப்புக்கொடுப்பேன்? நான் உன்னை எப்படி அத்மாவைப்போலாக்குவேன்? உன்னை எப்படி செபோயீமைப்போல வைப்பேன்? என் இருதயம் எனக்குள் குழம்புகிறது; என் பரிதாபங்கள் ஏகமாய்ப் பொங்குகிறது.
• Sermon Illustration:Robert Robinson, author of the hymn “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” lost the happy communion with the Savior he had once enjoyed, and in his declining years he wandered into the by-ways of sin. As a result, he became deeply troubled in spirit. Hoping to relieve his mind, he decided to travel. In the course of his journeys, he became acquainted with a young Christian woman who asked him what he thought of a hymn she had just been reading. To his astonishment he found it to be none other than his own composition. He tried to evade her question, but she continued to press him for a response. Suddenly he began to weep. With tears streaming down his cheeks, he said, “I am the man who wrote that hymn many years ago. I’d give anything to experience again the joy I knew then.” Although greatly surprised, she reassured him that the “streams of mercy” mentioned in his song still flowed. Mr. Robinson was deeply touched. Turning his “wandering heart” to the Lord, he was restored to full fellowship

When we will easily be swayed by the backsliding attitude, Risen Christ directs us to come back by involving in our lives. John.21:4-8

• 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish.
• 4. விடியற்காலமானபோது, இயேசு கரையிலே நின்றார்; அவரை இயேசு என்று சீஷர்கள் அறியாதிருந்தார்கள்.5. இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி: பிள்ளைகளே, புசிக்கிறதற்கு ஏதாகிலும் உங்களிடத்தில் உண்டா என்றார். அதற்கு அவர்கள்: ஒன்றுமில்லை என்றார்கள்.6. அப்பொழுது அவர்: நீங்கள் படவுக்கு வலதுபுறமாக வலையைப் போடுங்கள், அப்பொழுது உங்களுக்கு அகப்படும் என்றார். அப்படியே அவர்கள் போட்டு, திரளான மீன்கள் அகப்பட்டதினால், அதை இழுக்கமாட்டாதிருந்தார்கள்.7. ஆதலால் இயேசுவுக்கு அன்பாயிருந்த சீஷன் பேதுருவைப் பார்த்து: அவர் கர்த்தர் என்றான். அவர் கர்த்தர் என்று சீமோன்பேதுரு கேட்டவுடனே, தான் வஸ்திரமில்லாத வனாயிருந்தபடியினால், தன் மேற்சட்டையைக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு கடலிலே குதித்தான்.8. மற்றச் சீஷர்கள் கரைக்கு ஏறக்குறைய இருநூறுமுழத் தூரத்தில் இருந்தபடியினால் படவிலிருந்துகொண்டே மீன்களுள்ள வலையை இழுத்துக்கொண்டுவந்தார்கள்.
• Jesus called them ‘Children’ and asked the situation of their lives. They were empty. So he asked them to cast the net on the right side of the boat. He did it before in Luke 5:1-11. He did it again. They cast and had a multitude of fish. By doing it, Jesus showed his interest in their lives. He never commanded them to go fishing but at the same time when they did, he did not abandon them. He showed his power to them. The disciples realized that he was the Lord.
• When we are swayed by the backsliding, God does not abandon us. He continues to reach out to us and bring us back. He continues to care for us and shows his power to experience his amazing grace in our lives. He wants to experience his power in our lives where our trust is lacking through the obedience of his word. 
• Jeremiah 3:22 “Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding.” “Yes, we will come to you, for you are the LORD our God.”
• 22. சீர்கெட்ட பிள்ளைகளே, திரும்புங்கள்; உங்கள் சீர்கேடுகளைக் குணமாக்குவேன் என்றார். இதோ, உம்மிடத்தில் வருகிறோம்; நீரே எங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர்.
• 2 Chronicles 7:14: If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
• 14. என் நாமம் தரிக்கப்பட்ட என் ஜனங்கள் தங்களைத் தாழ்த்தி, ஜெபம்பண்ணி, என் முகத்தைத் தேடி, தங்கள் பொல்லாத வழிகளைவிட்டுத் திரும்பினால், அப்பொழுது பரலோகத்திலிருக்கிற நான் கேட்டு, அவர்கள் பாவத்தை மன்னித்து, அவர்கள் தேசத்துக்கு க்ஷேமத்தைக் கொடுப்பேன்.
• Biblical example: Joshua 7:6: 6 Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
• 6. அப்பொழுது யோசுவா தன் வஸ்திரங்களைக் கிழித்துக்கொண்டு, அவனும் இஸ்ரவேலின் மூப்பரும் சாயங்காலமட்டும் கர்த்தரின் பெட்டிக்கு முன்பாகத் தரையிலே முகங்குப்புற விழுந்து, தங்கள் தலைகளின்மேல் புழுதியைப் போட்டுக்கொண்டு கிடந்தார்கள்.
• Sermon illustration:"The symptoms of spiritual decline," says Dr. Payson, "are like those which attend the decline of bodily health. It generally commences with the loss of appetite, and a disrelish for wholesome food, prayer, reading the Scriptures and devotional books. Whenever you perceive these symptoms be alarmed! Your spiritual health is in danger. Apply immediately to the Great Physician for a cure.”

When Risen Christ directs us to come back by involving in our lives, he invites us to continue to dwell with him.

• 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.14 This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.
• 9. அவர்கள் கரையிலே வந்திறங்கினபோது, கரிநெருப்புப் போட்டிருக்கிறதையும், அதின்மேல் மீன் வைத்திருக்கிறதையும், அப்பத்தையும் கண்டார்கள்.10. இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி: நீங்கள் இப்பொழுது பிடித்த மீன்களில் சிலவற்றைக் கொண்டுவாருங்கள் என்றார்.11. சீமோன்பேதுரு படவில் ஏறி, நூற்றைம்பத்துமூன்று பெரிய மீன்களால் நிறைந்த வலையைக் கரையில் இழுத்தான்; இத்தனை மீன்கள் இருந்தும் வலை கிழியவில்லை.12. இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி: வாருங்கள், போஜனம்பண்ணுங்கள் என்றார். அவரைக் கர்த்தரென்று சீஷர்கள் அறிந்தபடியினால் அவர்களில் ஒருவனும்: நீர் யார் என்று கேட்கத் துணியவில்லை.13. அப்பொழுது இயேசு வந்து, அப்பத்தையும் மீனையும் எடுத்து, அவர்களுக்குக் கொடுத்தார்.14. இயேசு மரித்தோரிலிருந்தெழுந்தபின்பு தம்முடைய சீஷருக்கு அருளின தரிசனங்களில் இது மூன்றாவது தரிசனம்.
• When the disciples arrived at the shore, Jesus asked them to bring some of the fish why they had caught. Jesus made breakfast for them. Jerome wrote that 153 different types of fish. Jesus continued to show them how to minister to the people like a servant and to follow him. By doing it, he dared them to ask proofs to trust hum. He emphasized what they call was and how to do them. 
• When we trust God again after our backsliding, we need to remember that trusting God is essential in following him and serving him. He wants us to move on in our faith journey and let go of the backsliding once for all.
• Job 22:23-26: If you return to the Almighty you will be built up; if you remove injustice far from your tents, if you lay gold in the dust, and gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrent-bed, then the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver. For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty and lift up your face to God.
• 23. நீர் சர்வவல்லவரிடத்தில் மனந்திரும்பினால், திரும்பக் கட்டப்படுவீர்; அக்கிரமத்தை உமது கூடாரத்துக்குத் தூரமாக்குவீர்.24. அப்பொழுது தூளைப்போல் பொன்னையும், ஆற்றுக் கற்களைப்போல் ஓப்பீரின் தங்கத்தையும் சேர்த்துவைப்பீர்.25. அப்பொழுது சர்வவல்லவர் தாமே உமக்குப் பசும்பொன்னும், உமக்குச் சொக்க வெள்ளியுமாயிருப்பார். 26. அப்பொழுது சர்வவல்லவர்மேல் மனமகிழ்ச்சியாயிருந்து, தேவனுக்கு நேராக உம்முடைய முகத்தை ஏறெடுப்பீர்.
• Hosea 6:1: “Come, let us return to the Lord; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up.
• 1. கர்த்தரிடத்தில் திரும்புவோம் வாருங்கள்; நம்மைப் பீறினார், அவரே நம்மைக் குணமாக்குவார்; நம்மை அடித்தார், அவரே நம்முடைய காயங்களைக் கட்டுவார்.
• Biblical example: 2 Chronicles 19:4: Jehoshaphat lived at Jerusalem. And he went out again among the people, from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim, and brought them back to the Lord, the God of their fathers.
• 4. யோசபாத் எருசலேமிலே வாசமாயிருந்து, திரும்பப் பெயர்செபாதொடங்கி, எப்பிராயீம் மலைத்தேசமட்டுமுள்ள ஜனத்திற்குள்ளே பிரயாணமாய்ப்போய், அவர்களைத் தங்கள் பிதாக்களுடைய தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் இடத்திற்குத் திரும்பப்பண்ணினான்.
• Sermon Illustration: Mike Yaconelli: I live in a small, rural community. There are lots of cattle ranches around here, and, every once in a while, a cow wanders off and gets lost … Ask a rancher how a cow gets lost, and chances are he will reply, "Well, the cow starts nibbling on a tuft of green grass, and when it finishes, it looks ahead to the next tuft of green grass and starts nibbling on that one, and then it nibbles on a tuft of grass right next to a hole in the fence. It then sees another tuft of green grass on the other side of the fence, so it nibbles on that one and then goes on to the next tuft. The next thing you know, the cow has nibbled itself into being lost."

Conclusion

In this Easter Season, the Risen Lord encounters our backsliding. From this passage, we learn that 

- When we lack faith and trust in God, we will easily be swayed by the backsliding attitude. John.20:1-3

- When we will easily be swayed by the backsliding attitude, Risen Christ directs us to come back by involving in our lives. John.21:4-8

- When Risen Christ directs us to come back by involving in our lives, he invites to continue to dwell with him. John.21:9-14

• What are your experiences of backsliding in your lives? What are the reasons for them?
• Have you ever recognized Christ’s presence or involvement in something you are doing as a backslider? What allow you to recognize Christ in that situation?
• When you come out of the backsliding, how can you help others to come out of those situations?
