Topic: Dealing with disappointments

Text: John.20:1-18

Introduction

-In this special Sunday, we celebrate and thank God for Christ’s resurrection. Today we meditate on the encounter of risen Christ with the disappointed Mary in the gospel of John.

Word Study

            - The word disappointment is used as Bosh in Hebrew and Kataischuno in Greek and it means as the prepared and unequipped disgrace or shame. When our expectations are delayed or confounded, God deals with our disappointment to make us strong and brave.,

1. When we are disappointed, we will become frustrated but God is there. John.20:11

• But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. John.20:11
• 11. மரியாள் கல்லறையினருகே வெளியே நின்று அழுது கொண்டிருந்தாள்; அப்படி அழுதுகொண்டிருக்கையில் அவள் குனிந்து கல்லறைக்குள்ளே பார்த்து,
• Peter and John examined the evidence of empty tomb. John was somehow persuaded that Jesus rose from the dead. However, he did not understand it. Here Mary did not have confidence that Jesus was risen. So she wept and looked into the tomb but found little difference.
• When we are disappointed, we usually express it in different ways. The emotions override our intellect initially. We are solely ruled by anger, disgust, disappointment. We express it as distress-anguish, fear-terror, shame-humiliation, contempt-disgust, anger and rage. When we are in the roller coaster mood, we will become despair and depressed. God knows it.
• Psalm 13:1-6 “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
• 1. கர்த்தாவே, எதுவரைக்கும் என்னை மறந்திருப்பீர், எதுவரைக்கும் உம்முடைய முகத்தை எனக்கு மறைப்பீர்?2. என் இருதயத்திலே சஞ்சலத்தை நித்தம் நித்தம் வைத்து, எதுவரைக்கும் என் ஆத்துமாவிலே ஆலோசனைபண்ணிக்கொண்டிருப்பேன்? எதுவரைக்கும் என் சத்துரு என்மேல் தன்னை உயர்த்துவான்?3. என் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தாவே, நீர் நோக்கிப்பார்த்து, எனக்குச் செவிகொடுத்தருளும்; நான் மரணநித்திரை அடையாதபடிக்கு என் கண்களைத் தெளிவாக்கும்.4. அவனை மேற்கொண்டேன் என்று என் பகைஞன் சொல்லாதபடிக்கும், நான் தள்ளாடுகிறதினால் என் சத்துருக்கள் களிகூராதபடிக்கும் இப்படிச் செய்தருளும்.
• Psalm 119:116 “Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees.”
• 116. நான் பிழைத்திருப்பதற்கு உமது வார்த்தையின்படி என்னை ஆதரித்தருளும்; என் நம்பிக்கை விருதாவாய்ப்போக என்னை வெட்கத்திற்கு உட்படுத்தாதேயும்.
• 1 Kings 19:4But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.
• 4. அவன் வனாந்தரத்தில் ஒருநாள் பிரயாணம் போய், ஒரு சூரைச்செடியின் கீழ் உட்கார்ந்து, தான் சாகவேண்டும் என்று கோரி: போதும் கர்த்தாவே, என் ஆத்துமாவை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும்; நான் என் பிதாக்களைப்பார்க்கிலும் நல்லவன் அல்ல என்று சொல்லி,
• Sermon Illustration:Sir Alexander Mackenzie is a Canadian hero. An early fur trader and explorer, he accomplished a magnificent feat when he led an expedition across Canada from Fort Chippewyan on Lake Athabasca to the Pacific Ocean. His incredible journey was completed in 1793, 11 years before Lewis and Clark began their famous expedition to the west. Mackenzie’s earlier attempt in 1789, however, had been a major disappointment. His explorers had set out in an effort to find a water route to the Pacific. The valiant group followed a mighty river (now named the Mackenzie) with high hopes, paddling furiously amid great danger. Unfortunately, it didn’t empty into the Pacific, but into the Arctic Ocean. In his diary, Mackenzie called it the “River of Disappointment.”

1. When we are disappointed, God makes it appointment to deal with our disappointments with his presence. John.20:12-16

• 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!”She turned and said to [c]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher)..”
• 12. இயேசுவின் சரீரம் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த இடத்திலே வெள்ளுடை தரித்தவர்களாய் இரண்டு தூதர்கள், தலைமாட்டில் ஒருவனும் கால்மாட்டில் ஒருவனுமாக, உட்கார்ந்திருக்கிறதைக் கண்டாள்.13. அவர்கள் அவளை நோக்கி: ஸ்திரீயே, ஏன் அழுகிறாய் என்றார்கள். அதற்கு அவள்: என் ஆண்டவரை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு போய்விட்டார்கள், அவரை வைத்த இடம் எனக்குத் தெரியவில்லை என்றாள்.14. இவைகளைச் சொல்லிப் பின்னாகத் திரும்பி, இயேசு நிற்கிறதைக் கண்டாள்; ஆனாலும் அவரை இயேசு என்று அறியாதிருந்தாள்.15. இயேசு அவளைப் பார்த்து: ஸ்திரீயே, ஏன் அழுகிறாய், யாரைத் தேடுகிறாய் என்றார். அவள், அவரைத் தோட்டக்காரனென்று எண்ணி: ஐயா, நீர் அவரை எடுத்துக்கொண்டுபோனதுண்டானால், அவரை வைத்த இடத்தை எனக்குச் சொல்லும், நான் போய் அவரை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளுவேன் என்றாள்.16. இயேசு அவளை நோக்கி: மரியாளே என்றார். அவள் திரும்பிப் பார்த்து: ரபூனி என்றாள்; அதற்குப் போதகரே என்று அர்த்தமாம்.
• When Mary looked into the tomb, she did not notice the burial wrappings and their arrangements. She saw two angels sitting inside and one was at the head and the other at the feet.She did not seem to reach with shock or fear. However she was curious to ask about Jesus. They asked her the reason for her weeping and she wanted to know the place where they have laid him.But Jesus revealed to him as the Lord dealing her disappointment.
• When we are disappointed, God considers it as an appointment. When something has happened in your life, it is natural to grieve and to be upset or frustrated. You need to take the time to feel sad, but you also need to then pick yourself up.. Don’t run from it, but face it and release it. Pray about it and be honest with God about how you feel and what you are experiencing.
• Psalm 34:17-18The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;
• He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
• 17. நீதிமான்கள் கூப்பிடும்போது கர்த்தர் கேட்டு, அவர்களை அவர்களுடைய எல்லா உபத்திரவங்களுக்கும் நீங்கலாக்கிவிடுகிறார்.18. நொறுங்குண்ட இருதயமுள்ளவர்களுக்குக் கர்த்தர் சமீபமாயிருந்து, நருங்குண்ட ஆவியுள்ளவர்களை இரட்சிக்கிறார்.
• Psalm 34:10, “The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.”
• 10. சிங்கக்குட்டிகள் தாழ்ச்சியடைந்து பட்டினியாயிருக்கும்; கர்த்தரைத் தேடுகிறவர்களுக்கோ ஒரு நன்மையுங் குறைவுபடாது.
• Biblical Sermon: 2 Corinthians.12: 7-8: 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to [b]buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.  
• அன்றியும், எனக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தப்பட்டவைகளுக்குரிய மேன்மையினிமித்தம் நான் என்னை உயர்த்தாதபடிக்கு, என் மாம்சத்திலே ஒரு முள் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது; என்னை நான் உயர்த்தாதபடிக்கு, அது என்னைக் குட்டும் சாத்தானுடைய தூதனாயிருக்கிறது.8. அது என்னைவிட்டு நீங்கும்படிக்கு, நான் மூன்றுதரம் கர்த்தரிடத்தில் வேண்டிக்கொண்டேன்.
• Sermon Illustration:The year was 1920. The scene was the examining board for selecting missionaries. Standing before the board was a young man named Oswald Smith. One dream dominated his heart. He wanted to be a missionary. Over and over again, he prayed, “Lord, I want to go as a missionary for you. Open a door of service for me.” Now, at last, his prayer would be answered. When the examination was over, the board turned Oswald Smith down. He did not meet their qualifications. He failed the test. Oswald Smith had set his direction, but now life gave him a detour. What would he do? As Oswald Smith prayed, God planted another idea in his heart. If he could not go as a missionary, he would build a church which could send out missionaries. And that is what he did. Oswald Smith pastored The People’s Church in Toronto, Canada, which sent out more missionaries than any other church at that time. Oswald Smith brought God into the situation, and God transformed his detour into a main thoroughfare of service.

1. When we are disappointed, God calls us to declare testimony about what he has done in our lives. John.20:17-18

• 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”18 Mary Magdalene came and told the [d]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
• 17. இயேசு அவளை நோக்கி: என்னைத் தொடாதே, நான் இன்னும் என் பிதாவினிடத்திற்கு ஏறிப்போகவில்லை; நீ என் சகோதரரிடத்திற்குப் போய், நான் என் பிதாவினிடத்திற்கும் உங்கள் பிதாவினிடத்திற்கும், என் தேவனிடத்திற்கும் உங்கள் தேவனிடத்திற்கும் ஏறிப்போகிறேன் என்று அவர்களுக்குச் சொல்லு என்றார்.18. மகதலேனா மரியாள் போய், தான் கர்த்தரைக் கண்டதையும், அவர் தன்னுடனே சொன்னவைகளையும் சீஷருக்கு அறிவித்தாள்.
• Jesus told her to go to the disciples how he dealt with her disappointments. He made her the first witness of his resurrection. As Peter and John had already saw the empty tomb and disappointed, he sent her to the disciples to know the fact of the resurrection.
• When God deals with our disappointments, he sends us to the others believers and share our testimonies so that they might come to God and experience God’s dealings with disappointments.
• Psalm.22: 22-24: 22 I will declare Your name to My brethren;
• In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.23 You who fear the Lord, praise Him!All you [h]descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,
• And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;Nor has He hidden His face from Him;But when He cried to Him, He heard.
• 22. உம்முடைய நாமத்தை என் சகோதரருக்கு அறிவித்து, சபைநடுவில் உம்மைத் துதிப்பேன்.23. கர்த்தருக்குப் பயப்படுகிறவர்களே, அவரைத் துதியுங்கள்; யாக்கோபின் சந்ததியாரே, நீங்கள் எல்லாரும் அவரைக் கனம்பண்ணுங்கள்; இஸ்ரவேலின் வம்சத்தாரே, நீங்கள் எல்லாரும் அவர்பேரில் பயபக்தியாயிருங்கள்.24. உபத்திரவப்பட்டவனுடைய உபத்திரவத்தை அவர் அற்பமாயெண்ணாமலும் அருவருக்காமலும், தம்முடைய முகத்தை அவனுக்கு மறைக்காமலுமிருந்து, தம்மை நோக்கி அவன் கூப்பிடுகையில் அவனைக் கேட்டருளினார்.
• John 15:27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.
• 27. நீங்களும் ஆதிமுதல் என்னுடனேகூட இருந்தபடியால் எனக்குச் சாட்சிகளாயிருப்பீர்கள்.
• Biblical Example: Mark.5:19: 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.”
• 19. இயேசு அவனுக்கு உத்தரவுகொடாமல்: நீ உன் இனத்தாரிடத்தில் உன் வீட்டிற்குப்போய், கர்த்தர் உனக்கு இரங்கி, உனக்குச் செய்தவைகளையெல்லாம் அவர்களுக்கு அறிவியென்று சொன்னார்.
• Sermon Illustration: After businesses were ravaged by bombs during World War II the owners would often clear away the rubbish and place a sign out front that said, “Business as usual.” When God saves us, His desire is that we would put out a sign that says, “Under new management.”

Conclusion

•  When we are disappointed, we will become frustrated but God is there. John.20:11
• When we are disappointed, God makes it appointment to deal with our disappointments with his presence. John.20:12-16
• When we are disappointed, God calls us to declare testimony about what he has done in our lives. John.20:17-18
