Topic: Communion with Christ

Text: Matthew 26:17-30

Introduction

Today we are going to meditate on one of the great events in the passion narratives. This passage is important in our gospel to understand the richness of the Holy Communion in our faith.

Word Study

• In the Bible, the Hebrew word Pasach is used for Passover which means pass over spring over or leap over. 
• In the bible, it is remembered for the exodus of Israel from Egypt and the exodus of believers from sin as Christ died as the lamb of God

1. The Communion of Christ reminds us of the Sacrifice of the Lord as the Lamb of God. Matthew.26:17-20

• 17 Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ”19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.20 When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve.
• 17. புளிப்பில்லாத அப்பப்பண்டிகையின் முதல் நாளிலே, சீஷர்கள் இயேசுவினிடத்தில் வந்து: பஸ்காவைப் புசிப்பதற்கு நாங்கள் எங்கே உமக்கு ஆயத்தம் பண்ணச் சித்தமாயிருக்கிறீர் என்று கேட்டார்கள்.18. அதற்கு அவர்: நீங்கள் நகரத்திலே இன்னானிடத்திற்குப் போய்: என் வேளை சமீபமாயிருக்கிறது, உன் வீட்டிலே என் சீஷரோடேகூடப் பஸ்காவை ஆசரிப்பேன் என்று போதகர் சொல்லுகிறார் என்று அவனுக்குச் சொல்லுங்கள் என்றார்.19. இயேசு கற்பித்தபடி சீஷர்கள் போய், பஸ்காவை ஆயத்தம்பண்ணினார்கள்.20. சாயங்காலமானபோது, பன்னிருவரோடுங்கூட அவர் பந்தியிருந்தார்.
• At the Passover time, Jesus asked his disciples to prepare the Passover and directed them as he directed the triumph entry. He did it to re-act what God had done in the book of Exodus and brought his revelation of Lamb of God to his disciples.
• The communion is constituted to remind us of the salvation we have received and also the cleansing and protection of God through his blood. He is our lamb of God. His blood is our protection.
• 1 Corinthians.5:7:7 Therefore [a]purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed [b]for us.
• 7. ஆகையால், நீங்கள் புளிப்பில்லாதவர்களாயிருக்கிறபடியே, புதிதாய்ப் பிசைந்த மாவாயிருக்கும்படிக்கு, பழைய புளித்தமாவைப் புறம்பே கழித்துப்போடுங்கள். ஏனெனில் நம்முடைய பஸ்காவாகிய கிறிஸ்து நமக்காக பலியிடப்பட்டிருக்கிறாரே.
• John.1:29:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
• 29. மறுநாளிலே யோவான் இயேசுவைத் தன்னிடத்தில் வரக்கண்டு: இதோ, உலகத்தின் பாவத்தைச் சுமந்துதீர்க்கிற தேவ ஆட்டுக்குட்டி.
• Bible Example:Exodus.12:1-13:6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.

•  Sermon Illustration: Henri Barbusse tells of a conversation overheard in a dugout full of wounded men during the First World War. One of the men had been terribly wounded, and he knew he has only moments to live. He had a friend with him, one who had already seen a bad start to a bad life. He'd made wrong decisions. He'd already served time in prison. In fact, he was wanted, back home, by the police again. The wounded man, the dying man, pulls the wanted man down, close to his face. He takes his dog tag, his ID chain, and presses it in the hand of his buddy. "Listen, Dominic, you've led a bad life," he said. "Everywhere you are wanted by the police. But there are no convictions against me. My name is clear, so, here, take my dog tag, take my wallet, take my papers, my identity, my good name, my life and quickly, hand me your papers that I may carry all your crimes away with me in death.

2.The Communion of Christ calls us to be aware of sin and the need of repentance. Matthew.26:21-25

• 21 Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.”22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, “Lord, is it I?”23 He answered and said, “He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”25 Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?”He said to him, “You have said it.”

• Christ explicitly told Judas about the sin he was going to commit and in a way he called him to rethink it. He made it a public call to him to repent. But he chose to reject the repentance call and went and did the sin.
• When Christ tells us about our sins, his intention is to make us repent from the sins and come back to him. When we ignore his warning, we will do sin and continue to destroy our lives because of stubbornness in our sins.
• 2 Peter 3:9:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward [a]us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
• 9. தாமதிக்கிறார் என்று சிலர் எண்ணுகிறபடி, கர்த்தர் தமது வாக்குத்தத்தத்தைக்குறித்துத் தாமதமாயிராமல்; ஒருவரும் கெட்டுப்போகாமல் எல்லாரும் மனந்திரும்பவேண்டுமென்று விரும்பி, நம்மேல் நீடிய பொறுமையுள்ளவராயிருக்கிறார்.
• Proverbs.28:13:He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
• 13. தன் பாவங்களை மறைக்கிறவன் வாழ்வடையமாட்டான்; அவைகளை அறிக்கை செய்து விட்டுவிடுகிறவனோ இரக்கம் பெறுவான்.
• Bible Example: Joel.2:13-14: “Now, therefore,” says the Lord,“Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” 13 So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God,For He is gracious and merciful,Slow to anger, and of great kindness;And He relents from doing harm.
• 12. ஆதலால் நீங்கள் இப்பொழுதே உபவாசத்தோடும் அழுகையோடும் புலம்பலோடும் உங்கள் முழு இருதயத்தோடும் என்னிடத்தில் திரும்புங்கள் என்று கர்த்தர் சொல்லுகிறார்.13. நீங்கள் உங்கள் வஸ்திரங்களையல்ல, உங்கள் இருதயங்களைக் கிழித்து, உங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் இடத்தில் திரும்புங்கள்; அவர் இரக்கமும், மனஉருக்கமும், நீடிய சாந்தமும், மிகுந்த கிருபையுமுள்ளவர்; அவர் தீங்குக்கு மனஸ்தாபப்படுகிறவருமாயிருக்கிறார்.
• Sermon Illustration: In 1981, a Minnesota radio station reported a story about a stolen car in California. Police were staging an intense search for the vehicle and the driver, even to the point of placing announcements on local radio stations to contact the thief. On the front seat of the stolen car sat a box of crackers that, unknown to the thief, were laced with poison. The car owner had intended to use the crackers as rat bait. Now the police and the owner of the Volkswagen Bug were more interested in apprehending the thief to save his life than to recover the car. Often when we run from God, we feel it is to escape His punishment. But what we are actually doing is eluding His rescue.

3. The Communion of Christ calls us to do it as continuous obedience to Christ. Matthew 26:26-30

• 26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, [c]blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is My blood of the [d]new covenant, which is shed for many for the [e]remission of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

• When Jesus blessed the bread and the wine, he constituted the sacrament for us to be obedient to do it until he comes back. He commanded to do it so that the church should continue to obey his words.
• Holy Communion is constituted by Christ to us to experience how much gracious he is to us. So participating in the holy communion is an act of obedience and remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice. 
• John.14:21:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and [a]manifest Myself to him.”
• 21. என் கற்பனைகளைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு அவைகளைக் கைக்கொள்ளுகிறவனே என்னிடத்தில் அன்பாயிருக்கிறான், என்னிடத்தில் அன்பாயிருக்கிறவன் என் பிதாவுக்கு அன்பாயிருப்பான்; நானும் அவனில் அன்பாயிருந்து, அவனுக்கு என்னை வெளிப்படுத்துவேன் என்றார்.
• 1 Peter 1:13-16:13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
• 13. ஆகையால், நீங்கள் உங்கள் மனதின் அரையைக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு, தெளிந்தபுத்தியுள்ளவர்களாயிருந்து, இயேசுகிறிஸ்து வெளிப்படும்போது உங்களுக்கு அளிக்கப்படுங் கிருபையின்மேல் பூரண நம்பிக்கையுள்ளவர்களாயிருங்கள்.14. நீங்கள் முன்னே உங்கள் அறியாமையினாலே கொண்டிருந்த இச்சைகளின்படி இனி நடவாமல், கீழ்ப்படிகிற பிள்ளைகளாயிருந்து,15. உங்களை அழைத்தவர் பரிசுத்தராயிருக்கிறதுபோல, நீங்களும் உங்கள் நடக்கைகளெல்லாவற்றிலேயும் பரிசுத்தராயிருங்கள்.16. நான் பரிசுத்தர், ஆகையால் நீங்களும் பரிசுத்தராயிருங்கள் என்று எழுதியிருக்கிறதே.
• Bible Example: Genesis.22:1-19:12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
• 12. அப்பொழுது அவர்: பிள்ளையாண்டான்மேல் உன் கையைப் போடாதே, அவனுக்கு ஒன்றும் செய்யாதே; நீ அவனை உன் புத்திரன் என்றும், உன் ஏகசுதன் என்றும் பாராமல் எனக்காக ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தபடியினால் நீ தேவனுக்குப் பயப்படுகிறவன் என்று இப்பொழுது அறிந்திருக்கிறேன் என்றார்.
• Sermon Illustration: Pastor Colton Wickramaratne in his biography shares that his wife Susanne’s illness got worse one day and doctors completely gave up on her. After coming home that night he had prayed, “Susanne and I have been together for many years. I release her into your hands, though it’s a very hard thing for me to do, you can take her unto yourself.”He got up around midnight, because he heard God speaking to him.“Who are you to grant me permission to take your wife? I do not need your permission to take her, I can take you and I can take your youngest granddaughter. Just obey me. Do not try to take my place.” (My Adventure in Faith, pgs. 245,246)

•  The Communion of Christ reminds us of the Sacrifice of the Lord as the Lamb of God. Matthew.26:17-20
