Text: John. 12:20-36

Introduction

After cleansing the temple and appreciating the woman who gave her best, Jesus talked about faith lifestyle principles to the disciples and the crowd. This passage is important in our gospel to understand the principles of Jesus as his community 

Word Study

• In the Bible, the Hebrew word Chayim and the Greek word Zio are used for life.
• In the bible, life is understood as the gift of God and life itself reveals that there is no life apart from union with God.

1. Jesus’ Faith Life Principle: Losing is Gaining Life. John.12:20-26

• 20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.23 But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much [d]grain. 25 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

• When the Greeks were seeking Jesus, he affirmed that he was going to lose his life to gain the people in the world. Like a seed, he was willing to lose his life to gain many. He set the same principle for all who follow him. He talked in the trade language. Willing to lose is gaining.
• We are not called to hate or disregard our lives. We are called to make our lives so productive and blessings to many. To do it, we should be willing to lose ourselves and die so that many may find life. Our priorities should be right and have an attitude of love for other things of God. Simply say: Seek the Kingdom of God.
• Philippians.3:7-9:7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
• 7. ஆகிலும், எனக்கு லாபமாயிருந்தவைகளெவைகளோ அவைகளைக் கிறிஸ்துவுக்காக நஷ்டமென்று எண்ணினேன்.8. அதுமாத்திரமல்ல, என் கர்த்தராகிய கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவை அறிகிற அறிவின் மேன்மைக்காக எல்லாவற்றையும் நஷ்டமென்று எண்ணிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்.9. நான் கிறிஸ்துவை ஆதாயப்படுத்திக்கொள்ளும்படிக்கும், நியாயப்பிரமாணத்தினால் வருகிற சுயநீதியை உடையவனாயிராமல், கிறிஸ்துவைப் பற்றும் விசுவாசத்தினால் வருகிறதும் விசுவாசமூலமாய் தேவனால் உண்டாயிருக்கிறதுமான நீதியை உடையவனாயிருந்து, கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள் இருக்கிறவனென்று காணப்படும்படிக்கும்,
• 1 Timothy 6:6-9:6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, [d]and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
• 6. போதுமென்கிற மனதுடனே கூடிய தேவபக்தியே மிகுந்த ஆதாயம்.7. உலகத்திலே நாம் ஒன்றும் கொண்டுவந்ததுமில்லை, இதிலிருந்து நாம் ஒன்றும் கொண்டுபோவதுமில்லை என்பது நிச்சயம்.8. உண்ணவும் உடுக்கவும் நமக்கு உண்டாயிருந்தால் அது போதுமென்றிருக்கக்கடவோம்.9. ஐசுவரியவான்களாக விரும்புகிறவர்கள் சோதனையிலும் கண்ணியிலும், மனுஷரைக் கேட்டிலும் அழிவிலும் அமிழ்த்துகிற மதிகேடும் சேதமுமான பலவித இச்சைகளிலும் விழுகிறார்கள்.
• Bible Example:Matthew 13:44-4 :44 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
• 44. அன்றியும், பரலோகராஜ்யம் நிலத்தில் புதைந்திருக்கிற பொக்கிஷத்துக்கு ஒப்பாயிருக்கிறது; அதை ஒரு மனுஷன் கண்டு, மறைத்து, அதைப்பற்றிய சந்தோஷத்தினாலே போய், தனக்கு உண்டான எல்லாவற்றையும் விற்று, அந்த நிலத்தைக் கொள்ளுகிறான்.45. மேலும், பரலோகராஜ்யம் நல்ல முத்துக்களைத் தேடுகிற வியாபாரிக்கு ஒப்பாயிருக்கிறது.46. அவன் விலையுயர்ந்த ஒரு முத்தைக் கண்டு, போய், தனக்குண்டான எல்லாவற்றையும் விற்று, அதைக் கொள்ளுகிறான்.
•  Sermon Illustration: great composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) lived much of his life in fear of deafness. He was concerned because he felt the sense of hearing was essential to creating music of lasting value. When Beethoven discovered that the thing he feared most was coming rapidly upon him, he was almost frantic with anxiety. He consulted doctors and tried every possible remedy. But the deafness increased until at last all hearing was gone. Beethoven finally found the strength he needed to go on despite his great loss. To everyone's amazement, he wrote some of his grandest music after he became totally deaf. With all distractions shut out, melodies flooded in on him as fast as his pen could write them down. His deafness became a great asset.

2.Jesus’ Faith Life Principle: Suffering is Glorifying the Father. John.12:27-33

• 27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.”
• Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” 29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am [e]lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” 33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
• 27. இப்பொழுது என் ஆத்துமா கலங்குகிறது, நான் என்ன சொல்லுவேன். பிதாவே, இந்த வேளையினின்று என்னை இரட்சியும் என்று சொல்வேனோ; ஆகிலும், இதற்காகவே இந்த வேளைக்குள் வந்தேன்.28. பிதாவே, உமது நாமத்தை மகிமைப்படுத்தும் என்றார். அப்பொழுது: மகிமைப்படுத்தினேன், இன்னமும் மகிமைப்படுத்துவேன் என்கிற சத்தம் வானத்திலிருந்து உண்டாயிற்று.29. அங்கே நின்று கொண்டிருந்து, அதைக் கேட்ட ஜனங்கள்: இடிமுழக்கமுண்டாயிற்று என்றார்கள். வேறுசிலர்: தேவதூதன் அவருடனே பேசினான் என்றார்கள்.30. இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி: இந்தச் சத்தம் என்னிமித்தம் உண்டாகாமல் உங்கள் நிமித்தமே உண்டாயிற்று.31. இப்பொழுதே இந்த உலகத்துக்கு நியாயத்தீர்ப்பு உண்டாகிறது; இப்பொழுதே இந்த உலகத்தின் அதிபதி புறம்பாகத் தள்ளப்படுவான்.32. நான் பூமியிலிருந்து உயர்த்தப்பட்டிருக்கும்போது, எல்லாரையும் என்னிடத்தில் இழுத்துக்கொள்ளுவேன் என்றார்.33. தாம் இன்னவிதமான மரணமாய் மரிக்கப்போகிறாரென்பதைக் குறிக்கும்படி இப்படிச் சொன்னார்.
• When Jesus knew that the sufferings were cruel and dangerous, he did not run away from them. Cross was the purpose of his incarnation. He wanted to glorify the Father in every way through his life especially through the sufferings. The Father agreed with his statement. Though the crowd did not figure it out, Jesus knew that his sufferings glorified God. 
• When we do and face sufferings because of God’s purpose, we tend to avoid them but indeed they become the opportunities of glorifying God. God makes our sufferings to declare his glory to many in this world and draw many people to redemption and also judgment.
• 1 Peter 4:12-13:12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.
• Romans.8:16-17:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
• Bible Example: Matthew 20:20-23: 20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him.21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?”She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”
• 22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, [e]and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”They said to Him, “We are able.”23 So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, [f]and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.”
• 20. அப்பொழுது, செபெதேயுவின் குமாரருடைய தாய் தன் குமாரரோடுகூட அவரிடத்தில் வந்து, அவரைப் பணிந்துகொண்டு: உம்மிடத்தில் ஒரு விண்ணப்பம் பண்ணவேண்டும் என்றாள்.21. அவர் அவளை நோக்கி: உனக்கு என்ன வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவள்: உம்முடைய ராஜ்யத்திலே என் குமாரராகிய இவ்விரண்டுபேரில் ஒருவன் உமது வலது பாரிசத்திலும், ஒருவன் உமது இடது பாரிசத்திலும் உட்கார்ந்திருக்கும்படி அருள் செய்யவேண்டும் என்றாள்.22. இயேசு பிரதியுத்தரமாக: நீங்கள் கேட்டுக்கொள்ளுகிறது இன்னது என்று உங்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. நான் குடிக்கும் பாத்திரத்தில் நீங்கள் குடிக்கவும், நான் பெறும் ஸ்நானத்தை நீங்கள் பெறவும் உங்களால் கூடுமா என்றார். அதற்கு அவர்கள் கூடும் என்றார்கள்.23. அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கி: என் பாத்திரத்தில் நீங்கள் குடிப்பீர்கள், நான் பெறும் ஸ்நானத்தையும் நீங்கள் பெறுவீர்கள்; ஆனாலும், என் வலது பாரிசத்திலும் என் இடது பாரிசத்திலும் உட்கார்ந்திருக்கும்படி என் பிதாவினால் எவர்களுக்கு ஆயத்தம்பண்ணப்பட்டிருக்கிறதோ அவர்களுக்கேயல்லாமல், மற்றொருவருக்கும் அதை அருளுவது என் காரியமல்ல என்றார்.
• Sermon Illustration: Somerset Maugham, the English writer, once wrote a story about a janitor at St Peter's Church in London. One day a young vicar discovered that the janitor was illiterate and fired him. Jobless, the man invested his meager savings in a tiny tobacco shop, where he prospered, bought another, expanded, and ended up with a chain of tobacco stores worth several hundred thousand dollars. One day the man's banker said, "You've done well for an illiterate, but where would you be if you could read and write?" "Well," replied the man, "I'd be janitor of St. Peter's Church in Neville Square."

3. Jesus’ Faith Life Principle: Believing is Walking in the Light. John.12:34-36

• 34 The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
• 34. ஜனங்கள் அவரை நோக்கி: கிறிஸ்து என்றென்றைக்கும் இருக்கிறார் என்று வேதத்தில் சொல்லியதை நாங்கள் கேட்டிருக்கிறோம், அப்படியிருக்க மனுஷகுமாரன் உயர்த்தப்படவேண்டியதென்று எப்படிச் சொல்லுகிறீர்; இந்த மனுஷகுமாரன் யார் என்றார்கள்.35. அதற்கு இயேசு: இன்னும் கொஞ்சக்காலம் ஒளி உங்களிடத்தில் இருக்கும்; இருளில் நீங்கள் அகப்படாதபடிக்கு ஒளி உங்களோடிருக்கையில் நடவுங்கள்; இருளில் நடக்கிறவன் தான் போகிற இடம் இன்னதென்று அறியான்.36. ஒளி உங்களோடிருக்கையில் நீங்கள் ஒளியின் பிள்ளைகளாகும்படிக்கு, ஒளியினிடத்தில் விசுவாசமாயிருங்கள் என்றார். இவைகளை இயேசு சொல்லி, அவர்களைவிட்டு மறைந்தார்.
• While the crowd believed that the Messiah cannot die, Jesus told them that the Son of Man would die. However, He is the light of the world but for a short period of time, he won’t be there. He asked them to believe in him in order to walk in the light. 
• We are called to believe the Lord, not by sight. When we walk in the faith, we will walk in the light. Believing is not a mental state but a lifestyle. Believing God in everything is a lifestyle of living in God.
• 2 Corinthians.5:7:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
• 6. நாம் தரிசித்து நடவாமல், விசுவாசித்து நடக்கிறோம்.
• Hebrews.11:6:"But without faith it is impossible to [walk with God and] please Him, for whoever comes [near] to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He rewards those who [earnestly and diligently] seek Him.” (AMP)
• 6. விசுவாசமில்லாமல் தேவனுக்குப் பிரியமாயிருப்பது கூடாதகாரியம்; ஏனென்றால், தேவனிடத்தில் சேருகிறவன் அவர் உண்டென்றும், அவர் தம்மைத் தேடுகிறவர்களுக்குப் பலன் அளிக்கிறவரென்றும் விசுவாசிக்கவேண்டும். 
• Bible Example: Matthew.14:22-33:28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw [e]that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

• Sermon Illustration: In 1799, Conrad Reed discovered a seventeen-pound rock while fishing in Little Meadow Creek. Not knowing what it was made of, his family used it as a doorstop for three years. In 1802, his father, John Reed, took it to a jeweler who identified it as a lump of gold worth about $3,600. That lump of gold, which was used as a doorstop for three years in North Carolina, is one of the biggest gold nuggets ever found east of the Rockies.
