Text: 1 Samuel.7:1-12

Introduction

Repentance is the central them in the life of a Christian and it is the very foundation of fasting and prayer. As you begin to fast, God will open your eyes to areas of your life that require repentance.

Word Study

• Hebrew words for repentance are Naham which means to regret and to be sorry (Isaiah.55:7) and Shur which means to turn around and to repent (Jeremiah.8:6; Ezekiel.33:11; Joel.2:12-13)
• Greek word for repentance is Metanoia which means to repent or to change of heart/mind (Luke.3:8; 2 Corinthians.7:8-10; 1 Corinthians.5:1-13)

Context:

1 Samuel.7:1-2: Then the men of Kirjath Jearim came and took the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, and consecrated Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord. 2 So it was that the ark remained in Kirjath Jearim a long time; it was there twenty years. And all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.

1. அப்படியே கீரியாத்யாரீமின் மனுஷர் வந்து, கர்த்தருடைய பெட்டியை எடுத்து, மேட்டின் மேலிருக்கிற அபினதாபின் வீட்டிலே கொண்டுவந்து வைத்து, கர்த்தருடைய பெட்டியைக் காக்கும்படிக்கு, அவன் குமாரனாகிய எலெயாசாரைப் பரிசுத்தப்படுத்தினார்கள்.2. பெட்டி கீரியாத்யாரீமிலே அநேக நாள் தங்கியிருந்தது; இருபது வருஷம் அங்கேயே இருந்தது; இஸ்ரவேல் குடும்பத்தாரெல்லாரும் கர்த்தரை நினைத்து, புலம்பிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

Repentance means turning from serving others gods and sins.

• 1 Samuel.7:3-4:3 Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths[a] from among you, and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the children of Israel put away the Baals and the [b]Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
• 3. அப்பொழுது சாமுவேல் இஸ்ரவேல் குடும்பத்தார் யாவரையும் நோக்கி: நீங்கள் உங்கள் முழு இருதயத்தோடும் கர்த்தரிடத்தில் திரும்புகிறவர்களானால், அந்நிய தேவர்களையும் அஸ்தரோத்தையும் உங்கள் நடுவிலிருந்து விலக்கி, உங்கள் இருதயத்தைக் கர்த்தருக்கு நேராக்கி, அவர் ஒருவருக்கே ஆராதனைசெய்யுங்கள்; அப்பொழுது அவர் உங்களைப் பெலிஸ்தருடைய கைக்கு நீங்கலாக்கிவிடுவார் என்றான்.4. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் பாகால்களையும் அஸ்தரோத்தையும் விலக்கிவிட்டு, கர்த்தர் ஒருவருக்கே ஆராதனைசெய்தார்கள்.
• Samuel called the people of Israel to repentance in both inward ( with their hearts) and outward (put away the foreign gods). The inward should come first as their true attitude towards God. Because inward is hidden and no one can able to see it. If their inward repentance turned from their sins and other gods, then they could show it in outwards and serve the Lord only. They had two bondages. One was their bondage to the Philistines and other was their bondage to the gods of Philistines.
  • Ashtoreth was the goodness of fertility, love and sex and power of sickeness.
  • Baal was the god of fertility and power over nature.
• Repentance means our change of heart from serving other gods and sins. In other words, repentance means turning from sin and to follow God. Fasting means that we spend time of prayer to repent from our sins and from following other gods.
• Job.42:5-6:“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You. 6  Therefore I abhor[a] myself, And repent in dust and ashes.”
• 5. என் காதினால் உம்மைக்குறித்துக் கேள்விப்பட்டேன்; இப்பொழுதோ என் கண் உம்மைக் காண்கிறது.6. ஆகையால் நான் என்னை அருவருத்து, தூளிலும் சாம்பலிலும் இருந்து மனஸ்தாபப்படுகிறேன் என்றான்.
• Acts.3:19:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
• 19. ஆனபடியினாலே கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதானத்திலிருந்து இளைப்பாறுதலின் காலங்கள் வரும்படிக்கும், முன்னே குறிக்கப்பட்ட இயேசுகிறிஸ்துவை அவர் உங்களிடத்தில் அனுப்பும்படிக்கும்20. உங்கள் பாவங்கள் நிவிர்த்திசெய்யப்படும்பொருட்டு நீங்கள் மனந்திரும்பிக் குணப்படுங்கள்.
• 2 Peter 3:9:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward [a]us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
• 9. தாமதிக்கிறார் என்று சிலர் எண்ணுகிறபடி, கர்த்தர் தமது வாக்குத்தத்தத்தைக்குறித்துத் தாமதமாயிராமல்; ஒருவரும் கெட்டுப்போகாமல் எல்லாரும் மனந்திரும்பவேண்டுமென்று விரும்பி, நம்மேல் நீடிய பொறுமையுள்ளவராயிருக்கிறார்.
• Bible Example: The People of Nineveh: Jonah.3: 5-6,10: 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. 6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. 10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
• Sermon Illustration:A man was praying with his pastor at the altar. He prayed a prayer the pastor had heard many times before. “Lord, take the cobwebs out of my life.” Just as he said this the pastor interrupted, “Kill the spider, Lord.”Many times we ask the Lord to forgive us of some sin, yet we leave the source of temptation in our life.

Repentance means turning to God and His word with prayer and fasting.

• 1 Samuel.7:5-6:5 And Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.” 6 So they gathered together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the Lord. And they fasted that day, and said there, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah.
• 6. அவர்கள் அப்படியே மிஸ்பாவிலே கூடிவந்து தண்ணீர் மொண்டு, கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியில் ஊற்றி, அன்றையதினம் உபவாசம்பண்ணி, கர்த்தருக்கு விரோதமாய்ப் பாவஞ்செய்தோம் என்று அங்கே சொன்னார்கள்; மிஸ்பாவிலே சாமுவேல் இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரரை நியாயம் விசாரித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.
• At Mizpah, where Jacob serrated from Laban in Genesis.31:19 and also remembered as the place of separation and repentance, they put away the bad and pursue the good. In the context of ceremonial pouring of water before the Lord, they expressed their emptiness and need. They poured out their heart like the water ( Lam.2:19) and fasted and prayed. They turned to God.
• Fasting and prayer are essential in repentance to show that we turn to God from everything which is bad and are willing to accept God and his word wholeheartedly.
• Mark.1:14-15:14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel [f]of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God [g]is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
• 14. யோவான் காவலில் வைக்கப்பட்ட பின்பு, இயேசு கலிலேயாவிலே வந்து, தேவனுடைய ராஜ்யத்தின் சுவிசேஷத்தைப் பிரசங்கித்து 15. காலம் நிறைவேறிற்று, தேவனுடைய ராஜ்யம் சமீபமாயிற்று; மனந்திரும்பி, சுவிசேஷத்தை விசுவாசியுங்கள் என்றார்.
• Luke.24:46-48:46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, [l]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things.
• 46. எழுதியிருக்கிறபடி, கிறிஸ்து பாடுபடவும், மூன்றாம்நாளில் மரித்தோரிலிருந்தெழுந்திருக்கவும் வேண்டியதாயிருந்தது;47. அன்றியும் மனந்திரும்புதலும் பாவமன்னிப்பும் எருசலேம் தொடங்கிச் சகல தேசத்தாருக்கும் அவருடைய நாமத்தினாலே பிரசங்கிக்கப்படவும் வேண்டியது.48. நீங்கள் இவைகளுக்குச் சாட்சிகளாயிருக்கிறீர்கள்.
• Bible Example: The People of Israel. Judges.20: 26: 26 Then all the children of Israel, that is, all the people, went up and came to [a]the house of God and wept. They sat there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
• 26. அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரராகிய சகல ஜனங்களும் புறப்பட்டு, தேவனுடைய வீட்டிற்குப் போய்், அங்கே கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியில் அழுது, தரித்திருந்து, அன்று சாயங்காலமட்டும் உபவாசித்து, கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியில் சர்வாங்க தகனபலிகளையும் சமாதானபலிகளையும் இட்டு,27. கர்த்தரிடத்தில் விசாரித்தார்கள்; தேவனுடைய உடன்படிக்கையின் பெட்டி அந்நாட்களில் அங்கே இருந்தது.
• Sermon Illustration:On February 24, 2001, a one-year old Canadian girl named Erika wandered out of her house and spent the entire night in the Edmonton winter.When her mother, Leyla Nordby, found her, Erika appeared to be totally frozen. Her legs were stiff, her body frozen, and all signs of life appeared to be gone.Erika was treated at Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Health Center where she was resuscitated. To the amazement of all, there appeared to be no sign of brain damage, and doctors gave Erika a clear prognosis.When a Christian backslides, his heart grows cold to the Lord, but God is able to restore the Christian’s first love if he will repent.

Repentance means turning for God’s deliverance.

• 1 Samuel.7:7-12: 7 Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 8 So the children of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”9 And Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. Then Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. 10 Now as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. But the Lord thundered with a loud thunder upon the Philistines that day, and so confused them that they were overcome before Israel. 11 And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and [c]drove them back as far as below Beth Car. 12 Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name [d]Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

• When the repented people of Israel heard about the armies of the Philistines gathered at Mizpah, they were afraid and scared. Samuel encouraged them that God heard their prayer of repentance and fasting and he would fight for them. God did it so. God did not give up them. Samuel continued to pray for the nation and God responded to all prayers and worship through sacrifices. God answered them and delivered them.
• When we repent with prayer and fasting, we may see that battle ground is still there and we are panic inside but God promises that he answers to our prayers of repentance and fight for us. Battle belongs to the Lord and his victory belongs to us because we turn to God for his deliverance.
• Joshua 23:10:10 One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you.
• 10. உங்களில் ஒருவன் ஆயிரம்பேரைத் துரத்துவான்; உங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தர் உங்களுக்குச் சொன்னபடி, அவர்தாமே உங்களுக்காக யுத்தம்பண்ணுகிறார்.
• John 1:29:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
• 29. மறுநாளிலே யோவான் இயேசுவைத் தன்னிடத்தில் வரக்கண்டு: இதோ, உலகத்தின் பாவத்தைச் சுமந்துதீர்க்கிற தேவ ஆட்டுக்குட்டி.
• Psalm 99:6:Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those who called upon His name; They called upon the Lord, and He answered them.
• 6. அவருடைய ஆசாரியரில் மோசேயும் ஆரோனும், அவர் நாமத்தைப்பற்றிக் கூப்பிடுகிறவர்களில் சாமுவேலும், கர்த்தரை நோக்கிக் கூப்பிட்டார்கள்; அவர் அவர்களுக்கு மறுஉத்தரவு அருளினார்.
• Bible Example: 2 Chronicles.20:14-17:14 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15 And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the [d]brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. 17 You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.”
• 14. அப்பொழுது சபையின் நடுவிலிருக்கிற மத்தனியாவின் குமாரனாகிய ஏயெலின் மகனான பெனாயாவுக்குப் பிறந்த சகரியாவின் புத்திரன் யகாசியேல் என்னும் ஆசாப்பின் புத்திரரில் ஒருவனான லேவியன்மேல் கர்த்தருடைய ஆவி இறங்கினதினால் அவன் சொன்னது:15. சகல யூதா கோத்திரத்தாரே, எருசலேமின் குடிகளே, ராஜாவாகிய யோசபாத்தே, கேளுங்கள்; நீங்கள் அந்த ஏராளமான கூட்டத்திற்குப் பயப்படாமலும் கலங்காமலும் இருங்கள் என்று கர்த்தர் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லுகிறார்; இந்த யுத்தம் உங்களுடையதல்ல, தேவனுடையது.16. நாளைக்கு நீங்கள் அவர்களுக்கு விரோதமாய்ப் போங்கள்; இதோ, அவர்கள் சிஸ் என்னும் மேட்டுவழியாய் வருகிறார்கள்; நீங்கள் அவர்களை யெருவேல் வனாந்தரத்திற்கு எதிரான பள்ளத்தாக்கின் கடையாந்தரத்திலே கண்டு சந்திப்பீர்கள்.17. இந்த யுத்தத்தைப் பண்ணுகிறவர்கள் நீங்கள் அல்ல; யூதா மனுஷரே, எருசலேம் ஜனங்களே, நீங்கள் தரித்துநின்று கர்த்தர் உங்களுக்குச் செய்யும் இரட்சிப்பைப் பாருங்கள்; பயப்படாமலும் கலங்காமலும் இருங்கள்; நாளைக்கு அவர்களுக்கு எதிராகப் புறப்படுங்கள்; கர்த்தர் உங்களோடே இருக்கிறார் என்றான்.
• Sermon Illustration:David Yonggi Cho pastors the largest church in the world (believed to be the largest church in history) - over 700,000 members! He and his staff have such a belief in the power of prayer and fasting that they rarely counsel people. If someone comes to them with a great problem or urgent need, their standard answer is, “go to prayer mountain and fast and pray for three days”. If they return with the problem still unmet, they tell them to go and fast and pray for a week. (Then for ten days/then for forty days.) They do not think it possible that a person would ever return to them again and not have the problem resolved!

Conclusion

In the times of Lent, we fast and pray. One of the biblical purposes of fasting and prayer is repentance. From this passage, we learn that

• Repentance means turning from serving others gods and sins.
• Repentance means turning to God and His word with prayer and fasting.
• Repentance means turning for God’s deliverance.

make?
