Generous Church

Philippians 4:10-23

Introduction

• Last week, we studied the topic of a Generous Home. We are called to be a generous home to give generously to God as Martha, Mary and Lazarus did.
• As the church, we are called to be a generous church in order to show this world about our trust in God and love for the people
• Today’s scripture reading focuses on understanding the generosity in our church from Paul’s perspective on generosity in the church of Philippi.

Word Study

• Hebrew word: Qahal: It means assembly of God
• Greek word: Ekklesia: It means a group of people called out.
• In the bible, Church means a group of people professing Christ as the Lord and meeting together to worship him, and seeking to enlist others to become his disciples.

Context of the text

• Paul wrote this letter to the Philippians to admire them for excelling in generosity. By encouraging them, Paul reminded them that the value of their generosity towards him and entire God’s mission brings God pleasure to see the church providing for each other out of the confidence that God will richly provide for them.

1. Generous Church draws closer to God and trusts God for everything. Phil.4:10-13
   • 10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your[a] care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to [b]be abased, and I know how to [c]abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through [d]Christ who strengthens me.
   • 10. என்னை விசாரிப்பதற்கு நீங்கள் இப்பொழுது மறுபடியும் மனமலர்ந்தபடியினாலே கர்த்தருக்குள் மிகவும் சந்தோஷப்பட்டேன்; இப்படிச் செய்ய எண்ணங்கொண்டிருந்தீர்கள், சமயம்மாத்திரம் உங்களுக்கு நேரிடவில்லை.11. என் குறைச்சலினால் நான் இப்படிச் சொல்லுகிறதில்லை; ஏனெனில் நான் எந்த நிலைமையிலிருந்தாலும் மனரம்மியமாயிருக்கக் கற்றுக்கொண்டேன்.12. தாழ்ந்திருக்கவும் எனக்குத் தெரியும், வாழ்ந்திருக்கவும் எனக்குத் தெரியும்; எவ்விடத்திலும் எல்லாவற்றிலும் திருப்தியாயிருக்கவும் பட்டினியாயிருக்கவும், பரிபூரணமடையவும் குறைவுபடவும் போதிக்கப்பட்டேன்.

   • 13. என்னைப் பெலப்படுத்துகிற கிறிஸ்துவினாலே எல்லாவற்றையுஞ்செய்ய எனக்குப் பெலனுண்டு.
   • Paul mentions that the generous church draws closer to God in appreciation (10), contentment (11), adaptability (12) and dependency on God (13). Paul realized the necessity of living in a Christian community by trusting God and also knew what it meant to face life’s problems alone and still triumph through them.
   • When the church is dependent on God for everything and they ask God for their needs for their inward life and ministry so that they may trust God and ask him for the church’s outward ministry.
   • 2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work
   • 8. மேலும், நீங்கள் எல்லாவற்றிலும் எப்பொழுதும் சம்பூரணமுடையவர்களாயும், சகலவித நற்கிரியைகளிலும் பெருகுகிறவர்களாயுமிருக்கும்படியாக, தேவன் உங்களிடத்தில் சகலவித கிருபையையும் பெருகச்செய்ய வல்லவராயிருக்கிறார்.
   • 1 Timothy 6:17: 17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.
   • 17. இவ்வுலகத்திலே ஐசுவரியமுள்ளவர்கள் இறுமாப்பான சிந்தையுள்ளவர்களாயிராமலும், நிலையற்ற ஐசுவரியத்தின்மேல் நம்பிக்கை வையாமலும், நாம் அனுபவிக்கிறதற்குச் சகலவித நன்மைகளையும் நமக்குச் சம்பூரணமாய்க் கொடுக்கிற ஜீவனுள்ள தேவன்மேல் நம்பிக்கை வைக்கவும்,
   • 18. நன்மை செய்யவும், நற்கிரியைகளில் ஐசுவரியவான்களாகவும், தாராளமாய்க் கொடுக்கிறவர்களும், உதாரகுணமுள்ளவர்களுமாயிருக்கவும்,
   • 19. நித்திய ஜீவனைப் பற்றிக்கொள்ளும்படி வருங்காலத்திற்காகத் தங்களுக்கு நல்ல ஆதாரத்தைப் பொக்கிஷமாக வைக்கவும் அவர்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிடு.
   • Biblical Example: Rich man and Lazarus. Luke 16:19-31: 16:25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
   • 25. அதற்கு ஆபிரகாம்: மகனே, நீ பூமியிலே உயிரோடிருக்குங் காலத்தில் உன் நன்மைகளை அனுபவித்தாய், லாசருவும் அப்படியே தீமைகளை அநுபவித்தான், அதை நினைத்துக்கொள்; இப்பொழுது அவன் தேற்றப்படுகிறான், நீயோ வேதனைப்படுகிறாய்.
   • Sermon illustration: A little watch, delicately strung, was dissatisfied with its restricted sphere of influence in a lady's pocket. It envied the position of Big Ben, the great tower clock. One day as it passed with her ladyship over London's Westminster Bridge, the tiny watch exclaimed, "I wish I could go up there! I could then serve multitudes, instead of just one individual." "You shall have your opportunity, small watch," she said. One day the pocket timepiece was drawn up the side of the mammoth tower by a slender thread. When it reached the top, it was completely lost to view. Its elevation had become its annihilation"

2. Generous Church invests everything for the Kingdom of God and eternity.. Phil.4:14-23

• 14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I [e]have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, but especially those who are of Caesar’s household.23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with [f]you all. Amen.

• Paul was encouraging the church for their gifts, support and friendship and investment in the Kingdom of God and eternity. They were faithfulness in giving  when Paul left for Macedonia (15), in Thessalonica (16) and went to Thessalonica and Berea (Acts 17:1-3),  They supported him when he moved into the areas of Athens and Corinth (Acts 17:14-18:18). He admired them to give generously as the whole church and also individual families for the mission in the world.
• The Generous Church is always willing to support the missions around the world because it knows that the wealth of God is open to all who love him and love others. When the church is generous in giving, then it will experience receiving generously.
• 2 Corinthians 8:7:7 But as you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—see that you abound in this grace also.
• 7. அல்லாமலும், விசுவாசத்திலும், போதிப்பிலும், அறிவிலும், எல்லாவித ஜாக்கிரதையிலும், எங்கள்மேலுள்ள உங்கள் அன்பிலும், மற்றெல்லாக் காரியங்களிலும், நீங்கள் பெருகியிருக்கிறதுபோல, இந்தத் தர்மகாரியத்திலும் பெருகவேண்டும்.
• 1 John 3:16-18:  16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?8 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth
• 16. அவர் தம்முடைய ஜீவனை நமக்காகக் கொடுத்ததினாலே அன்பு இன்னதென்று அறிந்திருக்கிறோம்; நாமும் சகோதரருக்காக ஜீவனைக்கொடுக்கக் கடனாளிகளாயிருக்கிறோம்.17. ஒருவன் இவ்வுலக ஆஸ்தி உடையவனாயிருந்து, தன் சகோதரனுக்குக் குறைச்சலுண்டென்று கண்டு, தன் இருதயத்தை அவனுக்கு அடைத்துக்கொண்டால், அவனுக்குள் தேவ அன்பு நிலைகொள்ளுகிறதெப்படி?18. என் பிள்ளைகளே, வசனத்தினாலும் நாவினாலுமல்ல, கிரியையினாலும் உண்மையினாலும் அன்புகூரக்கடவோம்.
• Biblical Example: Exodus 36: 5 and they spoke to Moses, saying, “The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work which the Lord commanded us to do.”6 So Moses gave a commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, “Let neither man nor woman do any more work for the offering of the sanctuary.” And the people were restrained from bringing, 7 for the material they had was sufficient for all the work to be done—indeed too much.
• 5. மோசேயை நோக்கி: கர்த்தர் செய்யும்படி கற்பித்த வேலைக்கு வேண்டியதற்கு அதிகமான பொருள்களை ஜனங்கள் கொண்டுவருகிறார்கள் என்றார்கள்.
• 6. அப்பொழுது மோசே இனி புருஷர்களாவது ஸ்திரீகளாவது பரிசுத்த ஸ்தலத்துக்கென்று காணிக்கையாக ஒரு வேலையும் செய்யவேண்டாம் என்று பாளயம் எங்கும் கூறும்படி கட்டளையிட்டான்; இவ்விதமாய் ஜனங்கள் கொண்டுவருகிறது நிறுத்தப்பட்டது.7. செய்யவேண்டிய எல்லா வேலைகளுக்கும் போதுமான பொருள்கள் இருந்ததுமல்லாமல் அதிகமாயும் இருந்தது.
• Sermon Illustration: The great British preacher Charles H. Spurgeon once learned about this kind of trust while trying to raise money for poor children in London. He went to Bristol hoping to collect £300 (which in those days was a huge amount of money) for London’s homeless children. At the end of the week of meetings, many lives had been changed and his financial goal had been reached. That night, as he bowed in prayer, Spurgeon was clearly prompted to give the money to a co-laborer of Christ named George Mueller.“Oh no, Lord,” answered Spurgeon, “I need it for my own dear orphans.” Yet Spurgeon couldn’t shake the idea that God wanted him to part with it. Only when he said, “Yes, Lord, I will,” could he find rest.With great peace, he made his way the next morning to Mueller’s orphanage and found the great man of prayer on his knees. The famous minister placed his hand on Mueller’s shoulder and said, “George, God has told me to give you the £300 I’ve collected.”“Oh, my dear brother,” exclaimed Mueller,” I’ve just been asking him for exactly that amount!” The two servants of the Lord wept and rejoiced together.When Spurgeon returned to London, he found an envelope on his desk containing more than £300. The Lord had returned the £300 he had obediently given to Mueller, with 300 shillings of interest

Questions for Discussion

1. A generous church trusts God for all things. What keeps you from feeling the contentment in Christ? Do you trust God for all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus?
2.  How have you seen God provide for you in the past both physically and spiritually?
3. What are the ways you help the church to support missions in the world? What are your investments individually and collectively for the Kingdom of God ministries?
4. What are the needs of mission outside of the church? What would it look like for you to partner with the church and show your generosity and support the mission?
