Psalm 62:11-12—part 4
“Power belongs to God”
Charles Spurgeon said, “God’s power is like himself, self-evident, self-sustained. The mightiest of men cannot add so much as a shadow of increased power to the omnipotent one. He sits on no buttressed throne and lean on no assisting arm. His court is not maintained by his courtiers nor does it borrow its splendor from his creatures. He is Himself the great central source and originator of all power”
In Job 26: 12-14 says, “By His power He stilled the sea; By His understanding He shattered Rahab (sea monster). By His wind the heavens were made fair; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent. Behold these are but the outskirts of His ways and how small a whisper do we hear of Him. But the thunder of His power who can understand?
It is only a glimpse and a fraction of His power that we see expressed in creation.
The source of that power is infinitely and incredibly greater than the power displayed in His creation. John Snyder said, “Almighty, all-powerful, omnipotent, unlimited in regard to action –these are the childish words we use to express something of the mere edges of His glorious power”
Why is David recalling at this point about the awesome power of God? David is under severe pressure. Absalom and his wicked men are hankering after his throne and his life. David’s Royal power and authority are on the wane. He is a man on the run for his life. No human or earthly power can save him now. He needs a power that will overthrow all the powers pitted against him. He , now , leans on the Power of God which is incomparable, incredible, and invincible to deliver him from his hopeless plight.
John Snyder’s illustration is worth recalling here: “Imagine a jumbo jet in flight.
Inside the jet a gnat is buzzing around. The gnat lands for a moment inside the plane and then begins being torn apart by fear. The jet with its added passengers and luggage, weighs almost 900,000 pounds. The gnat is concerned that the Jumbo Jet may not be able to handle the extra weight of its tiny body resting on the back of the seat. He is flapping his wings and saying, “I am afraid this plane won’t be able to hold me up. We are going to fall out of the sky”
A plane that carries 900,000 pounds of weight, would not feel the burden of carrying a 2 milligram insect on board. It is ludicrous!
Sometime, like that tiny gnat, we are worried that our burdens are too much for God to hold us up. We think the weight of 2 milligram problems is too much for God to handle. David in verses 11 and 12 combines two natures of God: His power and His unfailing love. The powerful God is also a loving God. What a combination! Are you, like David, going through some pressing and painful problems? Just roll all your problems over to his loving and powerful Hands and He will take care of them. God bless you. Pastor lite
